Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, according to pundit Barry Ferguson, should leave the club in the summer and join West Ham United.
McTominay has battled for playing time in Manchester United’s crowded midfield, with Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and Bruno Fernandes favoured ahead of him. The arrival of Sofyan Amrabat on loan in the summer is expected to push McTominay down the pecking order.
Meanwhile, McTominay has been outstanding for Scotland in the 2024 UEFA Euro Qualifiers. With five goals, he is the competition’s second-highest goal scorer.
Ferguson believes the Manchester United player is underappreciated and said (via HITC):
“I believe he’s underappreciated, Scott McTominay. Brilliant size in the pitch’s center. He has also played defensively for Scotland. I like him a lot.”
Ferguson went on to say:
“At this point in time, Manchester United require a player like that.” I can’t believe he’s not given a chance. He’ll have to think about it carefully. He has to go someplace if he isn’t getting much game time. Even if it’s just till the season ends in January.”
He went on to say that McTominay may join clubs like West Ham:
“There are a number of clubs interested in Scott McTominay.” What were they talking about when they said £35-40 million to West Ham? If clubs are unwilling to do so, I am convinced he should sit down with the manager and tell him, “Listen, I have Germany to think about.” ‘Do you think I could go out on loan?'”
West Ham made a combined approach of more than £50 million for McTominay and Harry Maguire in the summer, but neither player accepted (via BBC).
An analysis of Scott McTominay's time at Manchester United
Scott McTominay, 26, came up through Manchester United’s youth system before making his professional debut in 2017. He has now made 211 appearances for the club, scoring 19 goals and assisting on five occasions.
However, the Scottish midfielder has only made two appearances this season, totaling just seven minutes of playing time. He is clearly not Erik Ten Hag’s first choice.
McTominay has won the EFL Cup twice with the Red Devils. McTominay’s match time may be reduced further now that Amrabat has joined the club.
