Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz, two stars for Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz of Liverpool praised teammate Cody Gakpo for his performance in the Premier League on January 1 (Monday), as the Reds overcame the Magpies 4-2.

Liverpool, playing at Anfield, had many opportunities in the first half but missed penalties, with Mohamed Salah missing one in the 22nd minute. Nevertheless, the Egyptian striker broke the impasse early in the second half (49′).

In the 54th minute, Alexander Isak gave the Magpies an equalizer; however, the Reds’ advantage was regained by goals from Curtis Jones (74′) and Cody Gakpo (78′). Salah’s penalty in the 86th minute put an end to the match, but Sven Botman’s second goal for Newcastle United (81′) set up a suspenseful finale.

In his brief time on the field, Cody Gakpo—who came in for Darwin Nunez in the 64th minute—managed to finish one tackle and two shots on goal.

The former PSV Eindhoven attacker posted a couple images from the game on Instagram after the encounter. With a caption, he posted:

How fitting that 2024 begin now. Thank God for another year of life!”

Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Luis Diaz were among the Liverpool players who responded to the photos on the social networking site after the post’s publication.

With 20 games played, the Reds have 45 points, three points clear of second-place Aston Villa in the Premier League. Next up, on January 7 (Sunday), Liverpool will travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the FA Cup third round.

Report: Liverpool keeping an eye on a former Manchester City defender

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano claims that Liverpool is keeping an eye on Borussia Monchengladbach defender Ko Itakura. According to Romano, the Reds have sent scouts to see Ko Itakura perform many times.

In 2019, Ko Itakura moved from Kawasaki Frontale to Manchester City. He was loaned to FC Groningen and Schalke during his time there, therefore he never played for the Premier League team.

Following his summer 2022 transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach, Ko has made 33 appearances for the Bundesliga team, tallying two goals and dishing out two assists.

In addition to the Reds, the Japanese defender is apparently being pursued by Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.
